Article cover: How to change the background mid-video (and tell better stories)

Changing the background during a video is a simple feature with a lot of storytelling power. It marks shifts in time, place or mood without needing a new scene. In Editor de Vídeo Online, you can split the video into segments, choose a background for each and define how the transition happens. Here is how to change the video background and when to do it.

Why change the background?

  • Before and after: a dark background for the problem, a light one for the solution.
  • Passing time: daytime sky to sunset (papercraft).
  • Topic change: each topic gets its own color.
  • Pacing: in longer videos, a change renews attention.
  • Branding: end on your brand color, together with the call to action.

Step by step

  1. Open the Background section (it works for both Hand drawing and Vox collage).
  2. Click + Change background mid-video. The video now has segments.
  3. Set how many seconds each segment stays on screen. The last segment runs to the end.
  4. Click a segment (in the list or on the bar) and pick a background from the gallery.
  5. Choose the transition between segments and adjust its duration.
  6. Click Generate animation and check the preview.

Example: a 10 s video → segment 1 for 5 s and segment 2 until the end.

Uploading several images at once

If you use Your image and upload several images at once, Editor de Vídeo Online creates one segment per image automatically. It is a fast way to make, for example, a video with a different background photo for each stage of a story.

The three transitions

TransitionEffectWhen to use it
DissolveOne background blends into the nextGentle changes, passing time
Paper sliding overA new sheet slides in over the previous oneChapter changes, handmade feel
Hard cutInstant switchFast pace, impact, before and after

To understand transitions between clips in the Studio as well, see transitions: hard cut, dissolve and fade to black.

Things to watch in Hand drawing mode

On backgrounds different from the original, only the line goes onto the paper. If one segment is dark and another is light, the stroke color must work on both. An alternative is to use backgrounds with similar contrast (for example beige and kraft) or to split into two separate scenes and join them in the Studio.

Script ideas with background changes

  • "Before / after": chalkboard → white.
  • A day in the life: sky → sunset (papercraft).
  • Three tips: notebook → grid → brand color.
  • Problem and solution: dark → beige.

Planning these changes in the script makes the video more cohesive. See how to structure it in visual storytelling with collages.

Frequently asked questions

How many backgrounds can I use in one video?

You can create several segments. In practice, 2 to 4 changes are usually enough; more than that can distract.

Are the backgrounds saved?

Yes. Chosen backgrounds are saved for your next scenes, except uploaded images. The Reset button returns to the artwork paper.

Can I sync the change with narration?

Yes. Set each segment's seconds to match the narration timing. Record the audio first to know the exact points.

Conclusion

Changing the background mid-video is a way to tell stories with color and texture. With well-chosen segments, timings and transitions, a single drawing or collage gets a beginning, middle and end. Try it in Editor de Vídeo Online.
